Leeds evening headlines as Todd Cantwell misses Norwich match amid Whites bid and defence hailed

Here are the Leeds evening headlines for Sunday, September 27.

Bamford reveals what he told Harrison ahead of Sheffield United game

Patrick Bamford has detailed the instructions he gave to Jack Harrison before his winning goal at Sheffield United.

The Leeds striker headed home from close range with just a few minutes remaining as Marcelo Bielsa’s side earned a 1-0 win at Bramall Lane.

And he revealed that the cross from Harrison was a preordained idea.

“The goal came off my nose but I'll take it,” Bamford told BT Sport. “To be honest, I was a bit disappointed that I didn't score the header that went over in the first half. It's important that we got the three points and I'm happy to have scored.

“Before the game, I said to Jack before that game that every time you get the ball, I'm going between the middle centre back and the far one, so put the ball there.

“First half, he did it but I didn't score. Second half, he did it again and I got the goal, so fair play to him for getting it on the money.”

Bielsa claims clean sheet is a ‘step forward’

Marcelo Bielsa highlighted the importance of keeping a clean sheet in victory over Sheffield United.

Patrick Bamford’s late header sealed the win, but the Whites looked a more cohesive defensive unit than in their previous two games.

After conceding four goals against Liverpool and three against Fulham, Bielsa admitted the defensive performance was a “step forward”.

“In the first two games we did not defend as badly as to concede seven,” he said in his post-match press conference .

“In this game, not conceding is a step forward.”

Bielsa also praised goalkeeper Illan Meslier, adding: “In the case of Meslier, he had some very important saves.”

Leeds make Cantwell bid as Norwich leave midfielder out of squad

Leeds have made an offer of £15m for Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell, according to Football Insider.

The Whites reportedly hope to complete a deal before the close of the transfer window on October 5.

And they have been boosted in their pursuit of the 22-year-old following the news that he has been dropped from Daniel Farke’s squad for today’s Championship game against Bournemouth.

Cantwell, who has two years left on his contract at Carrow Road, caught the eye in the Premier League last season, scoring twice and providing seven assists despite Norwich’s relegation.
