Leeds dog owners urged to watch out for deadly 'Alabama Rot'

Dog owners in Leeds are being urged to watch out for signs of 'Alabama Rot'.

Vets4Pets Leeds Colton says it has dealt with the first confirmed case of the disease in Leeds since 2017.

Skin lesions usually appear on canines when they contract Alabama Rot, which can be fatal if it's not detected early.

Vets4Pets say the cause of the disease, which is otherwise known as cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV), is still unknown but it is believed to be picked up by paws and legs on muddy walks.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "The (affected) dog was walked in a large number of areas prior to contracting the disease so we are unable to pinpoint the exact source of the disease.

'Seek advice if your dog develops unexplained skin lesions'

"In order to minimise the risk to your dog, wherever they go for a walk, please ensure to wash their feet and lower limbs when you get home.

"In total, the UK has now seen 185 confirmed cases across 38 counties since 2012, with 52 cases in 2018 and 10 in 2019. This is the 6th confirmed case in West Yorkshire since 2012.

"This disease is still very rare, so we’re advising dog owners to remain calm but vigilant, and seek advice from their local vet if their dog develops unexplained skin lesions."
