UPDATED: 2.20pm: Stuart Long, from Fairer Fares, has this afternoon announced the protest day has been called off. He said: "The campaign has looked at the situation with the weather forecasts and travel and road conditions and jointly with the Leeds Student Bus Campaign has decided for health and safety reasons that it would not be good to attempt tomorrow." Long said the campaigners will reorganise the event for another day.

Campaigners fighting for a better and cheaper bus service in Leeds are to brave freezing conditions and snow to press ahead with a day of action tomorrow.

The Fairer Fares campaign, which has launched an online petition for cheaper fares and a better bus service in Leeds, is joining with the Leeds Student Bus Campaign for the day of action.

The event will see campaigners asking people waiting at bus stops to sign a petition calling for cheaper fares, a better bus service and greater regulation of buses in the city.

Campaigner Stuart Long, of Fairer Fares, said:

"Nothing, apart from the world going bang, is going to stop this event going ahead!

"Attendance at the moment will be at the bus stops at Tiger-Tiger, the Parkinson Steps, The Arndale Centre as well as Unipol, where students will be asking the public waiting on services and in and around the area to sign up to the petition for fairer fares in Leeds."

Long said the day of action will finish in Arcadia in Headingley during the afternoon where Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland will be meeting the campaigners and showing his support.

More details of the event can be found over on Facebook.
