Leeds dad-to-be devastated after arsonist destroys new BMW in senseless act

A dad-to-be from Leeds was left devastated when his new BMW was set on fire by arsonists outside his mum's house.

Mark Burdon, 26, recently moved into his mum's Middleton home with his pregnant girlfriend and had just got into bed when he heard a loud banging at the front door.

He went outside to be confronted with the sight of his white BMW 1 Series engulfed in a ball of flames.

The self-employed bricklayer, who has been out of work for three weeks due to the coronavirus cirsis, purchased the BMW as his first ever car just six months ago.

"I've grafted my arse off for that car," said Mark.

"The fire brigade said someone had taken a rubbish bag out of my bin, put it under the car and set it on fire.

"Three neighbours had to move their cars because the fire was spreading."

Firefighters arrived at the scene on Throstle Terrace minutes after Mark phoned 999 and got the blaze under control.

Once the flames had died down the extent of the damage could be seen. The front of the car was totally destroyed, with the engine melted and the windscreen smashed.

Burned rubbish from the bag used to ignite the fire was strewn under the car and into the road.

Mark added: "It's horrible. I wouldn't dream of doing anything like this to anyone.

"I've got a pregnant partner and I've not been at work for three weeks because of coronavirus.

"Once I can work again I'm not going to be able to get there now because of this."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they are investigating the incident as an arson attack and said enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone who thinks they can help with the investigation can contact police on 101, quoting the crime reference number 13200185527 of 14/04.
