Leeds Covid rates explode with 1000% increase in 5 weeks as Boris Johnson announces end to rules

The coronavirus infection rate continues to rise and rise in Leeds.

The current rate in the city stands at 423.3 cases per 100,000 people and the city has recorded a total of 3,357 new cases in the week to June 30, according to the most recent data available by Public Health England.

This is an increase of 1,107 cases since the previous week and, alarmingly, a staggering 1,085 per cent increase since just five weeks ago on May 31, when cases were "stable" with an infection rate of just 35.7 per 100,000 people.

CEO of Leeds City Council, Tom Riordan, posted on Twitter on May 31: "Leeds Covid rates stable at 35.7 per 100k (from 36.1), and positivity, over-60s rate, & hospitalisations all low and stable & av 1 death per week. Plse enjoy the bank holiday sun & take care, follow rule of 6 indoors, keep yr distance & take vaccine when called by @nhsleeds"

Mr Riordan posts daily infection rate updates for Leeds on his Twitter account and, today, tweeted that the city's infection rate has once again increased in a 24 hour period.

Yesterday's rate was at 406 per 100,000 people, which makes today's rate of 423.3 a four per cent increase in just 24 hours.

However, Mr Riordan said that hospitalisations and deaths in the city are "stable" but did say that there had been "intensive work" involved in stabilising the city wards with the highest infection rates, along with "general rises" across the city.

The case rate for the UK - based on case numbers from the last seven days - is at 229.9, which means that Leeds has a case rate that is almost twice the national average.

Leeds has been the worst affected city for coronavirus infections in the whole of Yorkshire since the end of June.

Other badly affected areas in the region include Barnsley, which has an infection rate of 410.3, and York, which has a rate of 404.5.
