Leeds Covid-19 infection rate almost doubles in a week

Leeds' coronavirus infection rate has almost doubled in a week, the latest figures show.

In the seven days to June 3, the number of new cases per 100,000 people rose to 69.1 in Leeds, up from 39.3 the week before.

The city recorded a total of 548 new cases in the same time period, up from 312 over the previous seven-days.

And it is a similar picture in Harrogate, where the rate of new Covid-19 infections has doubled to 28.6 per 100,000 people.

The figures, for the seven days to June 3, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 244 (77%) have seen a rise in rates, 61 (19%) have seen a fall and ten are unchanged.

It comes as "Freedom Day" draws ever nearer, with just two weeks to go until the planned 'unlocking.'

Health Secretary Matt Hancock today (Mon) said that it is still "too early to make decisions on step four".

Mr Hancock added: "The road map has always been guided by data. We will assess the data and announce the outcome. I am confident that one day soon, freedom will return."

Leeds City Council's CEO, Tom Riordan, tweeted today (Mon) to reveal the rise in cases is mainly among the age groups yet to have a vaccine, especially those aged 17 and 18 years old.

He said the city is now averaging one Covid death per week as he appealed for people to "take care, follow the rule of six indoors, keep your distance and take the vaccine."
