Leeds Council update on school closures and coping in second lockdown

The council has issued an update on how Leeds schools will operate ahead of the second national lockdown.

Leeds City Council said it is not aware of any schools having to close next week due to coronavirus or staffing shortages.

However, there is the potential for this to happen, like it has in other areas of Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.

After England goes into a month-long lockdown on Thursday, November 5, schools and universities are among the only places that will remain open.

Government guidelines state: "It remains very important for children and young people to attend, to support their wellbeing and education and help working parents and guardians."

Asked whether any schools may have to close next week due to staff shortages as a result of coronavirus, a spokesperson for the council said: “We’re not currently aware of any schools having to close next week for this reason.

“However, we wouldn’t be able to say that won’t be the case come next week, as it would depend on whether there are any new cases confirmed in school communities between now and then, and circumstances around them.”
