Thousands of England football fans are expected to descend on Millennium Square for this evening's game with Algeria - but one unique element of the World Cup atmosphere will be missing in Leeds.

Council chiefs have banned air horns - including the infamous South African vuvuzelas - from being used while the 8,000 or so fans watch the big screen. The noisy vuvuzelas have caused a whole raft of complaints from TV viewers.
Signs banning air horns (and footballs) from the venue have this week been placed around the temporary fencing around the Square.

A Leeds council spokeswoman said this was due to the Leeds General Infirmary being across the road from Millennium Square

She said:

"We have no specific policy for the use of vuvuzelas at home or in public places during the World Cup. Any noise nuisance would be assessed under the normal noise disturbance rules."

Gates open at 6pm this evening. Fans are advised to arrive early to secure their places as admission will be on a strictly first-come first-served basis until the maximum capacity is reached.

No tickets will be issued or required, and the arena will feature a fully-licensed bar and food outlets.
