Leeds council chief executive Tom Riordan has yet to decide over a wage reduction

Leeds council's chief executive Tom Riordan has yet to make a decision over whether to take a wage reduction against the backdrop of £150 million cuts faced by the authority over the next four years.

As reported back in October, Riordan told members of the council's central and corporate scrutiny board that he when he accepted the chief executive's position he requested his wage to be at the bottom of the £150,000 to £200,000 salary band.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has advocated that council chief executives on under £200,000 a year should take a 5% wage cut and those above £200,000 should take 10%.

Riordan said about his wage in October:

"Where I go now is something I am giving consideration to. I am talking to my wife about it and it is something I need to think about. I'm not saying it is something I will do, but it is a decision I will take myself - I won't take it just because there is pressure from someone else."

Leeds city council this week confirmed that Riordan has not yet made a decision and 'is not ruling anything in or out at this stage regarding a pay cut'.

Leeds council will unveil its budget for the next financial year in February.
