Leeds' coronavirus infection rate soars again as city records biggest jump in Yorkshire in new weekly cases

Leeds' coronavirus infection rate jumped up again after 569 new cases were recorded in the city in just one week.

In the seven days up to September 12, Leeds' case rate (per 100,000 people) rose from 59.8 to 71.7.

That means Leeds is the second most infected area of Yorkshire after Bradford on 94.5.

The city also recorded its first coronavirus death in over a month in the past 24 hours. The NHS revealed today that Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust recorded a new death after 33 days without a fatality.

Leeds and Bradford continue to record by far the most new cases in Yorkshire, but only two of 18 Yorkshire towns and cities saw their infection rates drop over the same period.

In the week up to September 12 - which is the latest date Public Health England has reliable data for - only Harrogate and Barnsley had fewer cases than the week before.

Nationally, some areas saw infection rates double and even triple.

Bradford had been second on the list of most infected areas in England but was leapfrogged by nine locations in the North West.
