Leeds City Council’s ruling Labour group selected a new council leader elect at a meeting on Friday, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands.
A vote took place at an online meeting of Labour councillors, which saw current council deputy leader Coun James Lewis voted in by the group as its next leader.
The authority was rocked last month when it emerged leader Judith Blake would step down as leader this year, as she accepts a life peerage in the house of Lords.
It is not yet known when Coun Blake will be given her post in the Upper House, meaning the new council leader will be installed at an as-yet undecided time.
Coun Lewis has represented the Kippax and Methley ward of Leeds City Council since 2007, and currently holds the post of deputy leader and executive member for resources.
Coun Blake has led the council since 2015, taking over from Keith Wakefield.
A full council meeting is expected to take place at some point in the coming months which will see Coun Lewis officially installed as the new leader.
