Leeds City Council called upon to scrap waste charges 'immediately'

Leeds City Council is being urged to scrap controversial waste charges.

Conservative Barry Anderson will ask the council to scrap charges for bulky and inert waste 'with immediate effect' when he tables a white paper motion at a meeting on Wednesday, July 10.

The council has overlooked this request several times in recent months and continues to charge people for disposing certain types of waste, such as large furniture, sinks, toilets, concrete and tarmac.

The Labour-run council says it can no longer cover the costs of disposal, because its funding from the government is dwindling while demand for front-line services increases year-on-year.

The council has lost £260 million of government funding since 2010.

Critics believe the charges have led to an increase in fly tipping and over 670 people have signed a petition calling for them to be scrapped.

Statistics released earlier this year reveal more than 52,000 fly-tipping complaints were made to Leeds City Council during 2017 and 2018.

The ruling Labour group rejected several calls from opposing parties to get rid of the charges and cover the costs of disposing bulky and inert waste.

The Green Party said the council could do away with the fees if it invested an extra £390,000 in the Communities and Environment budget in 2019/20.
