Leeds city centre covered in glass and rubbish as mammoth clean-up begins after promotion party

Broken glass, empty beer cans and piles of rubbish greeted early morning risers in Leeds city centre this morning with a huge clean-up operation beginning in the wake of the city's promotion party.

Across the weekend, Leeds United fans celebrated the club's long-awaited return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence with crowds gathering outside Elland Road and in Millennium Square in the city centre.

The club were crowned champions on Saturday without even kicking a ball and after the Whites' 3-1 win over Derby County on Sunday, fans flocked to the city centre to revel in the moment.

However, there was some crowd violence with a minority of fans hurling bottles at police officers and on Monday morning, the aftermath of the party became clear.

Videos and pictures show the city centre covered in rubbish with cleaners from Leeds City Council waking up early to rid Millennium Square of litter.

There is lots of broken glass and cleaners are expected to be in the area for several hours tidying up to ensure it is once again safe for members of the public.

Assistant Chief Constable Oz Khan, of West Yorkshire Police, revealed on Monday that nine people were arrested for public order offences during Sunday's celebrations with police in the city centre for 12 hours monitoring crowds before dispersing them.

He said: “Throughout the weekend, fans have gathered across Leeds to celebrate the promotion of Leeds United into the Premier League. We have continued to impress upon fans the importance of the Covid19 Government guidance and our approach has primarily remained as one of engagement and encouragement.

"On Sunday (19 July), almost 7,000 people gathered in Millennium Square in Leeds; whilst the vast majority of fans were enjoying themselves and celebrating, there were a small minority of people who began to throw bottles at police officers.

"A female officer suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, a number of other officers suffered minor injuries and a further 15 members of the public were injured.

Officers were deployed to Millennium Square at 12pm to ensure the safety of all those present, as the evening progressed officers began to disperse the crowds.

"A total of nine people were arrested for public order offences. The area was cleared by 11.55pm. The safety of fans and the wider public is our primary concern.

"Violence towards police officers will not be tolerated and we deployed an appropriate police response to ensure that the festivities concluded safely.

"It is important to remind the public that we must not lose sight of the fact that Covid19 is still with us and that large gatherings are still not permitted.”
