Leeds business refused to pay £100 fine over mess - but it ended up costing them a whole lot more

A Leeds business that refused to pay a £100 fine for failing to contain waste has been ordered to pay nearly 30 times more than the original fine.

Leeds City Council’s Clean Leeds team said Al-Madina Superstore in Dorset Road, Harehills, was taken to court following failure to pay the fine.

After pleading guilty for seven offences, the business now has to pay £2,832 fines and costs, and they now have a criminal record.

This news comes after Maria Stoica, from Harehills, was caught illegally dumping a mattress and was fined £100 - which she also refused to pay.

She was taken to court and has now been ordered to pay £352 in fines and court costs. She now also has a criminal record.
