Leeds burglar caught red-handed by homeowners who were in the back garden

A burglar who was caught red-handed by homeowners who were in their back garden has been jailed.

Martin Urban entered a house in a cul-de-sac in the Armley area of Leeds on March 21 this year and tried to hide an iPad in his jacket.

But he was confronted by one of the homeowners and police were called.

The 51-year-old, of Tong Road, Farnley, Leeds, was jailed for two years and eight months today (Tuesday) after pleading guilty to burglary.

Leeds Crown Court was told Urban has a 'terrible criminal record', including for five offences of burglary.

Philip Mahoney, mitigating, said his client started drinking heavily after his parents and sister all died of cancer within three months of each other in 2015.

He said Urban had quit drinking but relapsed close to the sixth anniversary of his father's death.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC gave Urban one-third credit for his early guilty plea.
