Leeds buildings will shine bright purple tonight in memory of George Floyd

Leeds buildings to be lit tonight in memory of George Floyd and to stand against ‘prejudice in all its forms’.

Leeds City Council announced the civic hall and town hall will both be lit purple tonight.

The move is in solidarity with people fighting against racism or other forms of prejudice.

George Floyd's death at the hands of the police in the US city of Minneapolis has lead to riots across the world and a peaceful protest has been planned in Leeds on June 6.

They state they are proud of how ‘diverse and multicultural’ Leeds is and they will continue to make a stand against all forms of prejudice.

In a joint statement on behalf of the leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Judith Blake and the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Eileen Taylor: “Leeds Civic Hall and Leeds Town Hall will both be lighting up purple tonight in memory of George Floyd.

'We will continue to make a stand'

“We are incredibly proud of how diverse and multicultural our city is and we stand in solidarity with all those across the world who are struggling against racism or any other forms of prejudice.

“By lighting up our buildings we join George Floyd’s family in their sentiment of peaceful protest and will continue to make a stand against prejudice in all its forms.”
