Bosses at Leeds Bradford Airport have expressed their disappointment after British Airways announced they are cancelling all future flights to and from the Yeadon terminal.
The flights, which operated 10 times a week between London Heathrow and Leeds Bradford, were the only direct air travel route between Yorkshire and London.
However, with practically all planes grounded since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, BA have culled the service with immediate effect. They have announced no plans to resume the service in the future and the decision brings an end to an eight-year partnership.
It leaves Leeds Bradford Airport with no direct routes to the capital.
A spokesperson for the Yorkshire airport said that while they remain hopeful of BA returning in the future, they have been left "disappointed".
In a statement, they said: "We are disappointed that BA has taken the decision to cease its route between Leeds Bradford Airport and Heathrow.
"Domestic and international connectivity remains critical to support business and the region’s economy and we hope to welcome BA back in the future."
BA have also issued a statement on the decision, which said: "We are sorry to suspend our flights to Leeds Bradford after many years.
"We regularly evaluate our routes based on where our customers tell us they want to travel. We remain committed to connecting businesses, families and friends right across our UK network."
The news come just weeks after Leeds Bradford Airport submitted detailed plans for a brand new £150 million terminal, with the aim of increasing passenger numbers to seven million by 2030.
The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to bite the airline industry, with the majority of companies only resuming flights to popular destinations in the next couple of months.
