Leeds Bradford Airport could be renamed after 'The Queen of the Sky'

Hundreds of people have signed a petition to rename Leeds Bradford Airport after an extraordinary pilot who paved the way for women in the aviation industry.

In 1930, Amy Johnson became the first woman to solo from England to Australia when she completed the journey in a second-hand 1920s plane with an open cockpit.

Prior to setting off, her longest journey had been between London and Hull, but she completed the 11,000-mile trip when she landed landed in Darwin, Australia, 19 days after setting off.

Amy's incredible feats didn't end there though and at one time she was the only female ground engineer in the entire world.

She sadly died during World War Two after a crash landing in the River Thames while transporting a plane to an RAF base.

Her memory lives on through the Amy Johnson Arts Trust, but now campaigners are calling for her achievements to be recognised on a bigger scale.

Netflights have kickstarted a Change.org petition to rename Leeds Bradford Airport after the Hull-born pilot.

"Netflights has found that out of 352 airports that are named after people of note, past and present, only 16 are named after women," it says.

"That's less than 5%, a shockingly low number. Moreover, of these 16 women, only three have a background in aviation.

"We want to change all that and level the playing field globally. So, to encourage more airports around the world to adopt female eponyms, we're launching a new petition to inspire Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) to rename itself after the 20th century aviator, Amy Johnson."

More than 200 people have already signed the petition, with the target currently set at 500 backers.
