Leeds boy smashes fundraising goal after camping in his garden for the NHS

A six-year-old boy from Alwoodley has raised more than £1,000 for the NHS by camping in his garden after his nurse mum tested positive for coronavirus.

Harry Day and his dad James, 40, have spent the last seven nights camping in the garden in a bid to raise money for NHS Charities Together.

His mum, Debra, aged 37, tested positive for coronavirus after she developed a temperature and flu-like symptoms.

The family has been isolating for the last two weeks and Debra, who is asthmatic, said she was the only one in the family who had any symptoms.

She said: “Harry and his dad finished their seven nights of camping this morning (May 4).

“I’m so proud of Harry. He has done amazing. It all started last week Harry and his dad wanted to camp but Harry also wanted to raise money for the NHS. His friends had all done something and he said he would sleep in the garden.

“He said he’s not scared of sleeping outside and his dad has been moaning more than him.

“Even on the nights where it’s been raining, he was still out there. He was very determined he was going to do it.

“I think this has given him something to focus on.

“He lost his tooth while camping and the tooth fairy came in his tent.”

Harry’s fundraising page has exceeded its £50 target and he has raised £1,060.

Debra, who will be going back to work this week after completing the two-week self-isolation period added: “Harry has been joined by his little brother Freddie on a couple of nights because he wanted to be with his big brother.

"Harry and his dad camp in the garden once a year but usually when it's sunny weather.

“Harry said he wants to spend one more night in the garden but he’s going to be back in his bed today.”
