Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa plots £20million move for Stuttgart striker

Marcelo Bielsa is planning a £20million swoop for Stuttgart striker Nicolas Gonzalez.

Argentina international Gonzalez is rated as one of the hottest young properties around after plundering 14 goals in 27 outings to power the German outfit to promotion back to the Bundesliga this season.

And Leeds boss Bielsa believes the hit-man, 22, can be a big star in the Premier League with the newly-promoted Elland Road side after having him tracked through the second half of the campaign.

Bielsa wants a striker as a priority signing this summer, and he reckons Gonzalez has all the attributes to take the top flight by storm as the Whites get back to mixing it with the big boys after 16 years in lower league exile.

And the veteran manager, 65, is confident he can see off a clutch of top European clubs and win the race for his fellow countryman's signature.

Borussia Dortmund, along with Italian giants Inter and AC Milan, Roma, Lazio and Napoli, are all huge admirers of Gonzalez and will fight Leeds to land him.

But the pull of working with Bielsa in the Premier League make United the favourites to snap him up.

And, despite having him under contract for another three years, Stuttgart are resigned to losing Gonzalez who cost them £7.65million from Argentinos Jrs in 2018.

Leeds are also being linked with two Brentford players, with Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins lined up to bolster their forward line.

The Express believe a bid of £50m for the pair could tempt the Bees into selling after they failed to gain promotion following their 2-1 loss in the playoff final to Fulham on Tuesday.
