Leeds at centre of Storm Sebastien warning as torrential rain forecast for this week

Leeds looks set to to bear the full force of a tropical storm that is heading straight for Yorkshire.

Storm Sebastien formed over the Atlantic Ocean last week, but it has already arrived on our shores, with Wales currently under siege from heavy rain and gale-force winds.

By the time it arrives in Leeds on Wednesday morning, the winds will have died down.

However, torrential downpours are currently forecast from 6am on Wednesday, with the yellow weather warning for rain set to stay in place for a full 24 hours until the early hours of Thursday.

"Rain will turn heavy and prolonged at times leading to a risk of flooding in places," says a statement on the Met Office website.

"Rain is expected to become more persistent during Wednesday and turn heavy at times.

"Many areas are likely to receive 20-30mm of rain, with a few locations over higher parts of the Pennines and North Yorkshire Moors having 50mm.

"The location of the heaviest and most persistent rainfall is still somewhat uncertain and the warning may be updated in the coming days.

Large swathes of the north will feel the full force of Storm Sebastien (Met Office)

The areas covered by the weather warning stretch all the way across to Hull and as far north as Newcastle, with all of Yorkshire being told to brace for heavy rain.

It means some homes are "likely" to be flooded,  bus and train services will "probably" be affected, and spray will cause disruption on the roads.
