An Asda in south Leeds will begin trialling innovative solutions such as refill stations and a reverse vending machine in a bid to reduce its use of plastic.
Bosses have announced that the Middleton Superstore will be the first in the country to become a "sustainability store" with the three-month trial set to launch in May.
If the trial proves successful, it could be rolled out at hundreds of other Asda supermarkets across the country.
A whole raft of Asda own-brand products will be stored in big machines, where customers will be able to fill up their own containers with rice, pasta and coffee.
Kellogg's will also have a machine instore as part of the trail, so Coco Pops and Rice Krispies can be poured into plastic tubs, and PG Tips teabags are another item that will be available from the refill stations.

There will be no plastic packaging for many fruit and veg items either, such as mushrooms and cucumbers.
Other sustainable initiatives include a reverse vending machine for plastic bottles and cans, hanger recycling facilities and a 'naked florist', who will sell plastic-free flowers.
The move is part of the supermarket's commitment to drastically reduce its plastic packaging in the coming years, which includes the ambition to make all packaging 100 per cent recyclable by 2025.
Roger Burnley, Asda chief executive, said: "We're on an ongoing quest to remove and reduce the amount of plastic in our business – and to find new ways to help our customers to reuse and refill our products.
"It’s a journey we can’t go on alone, which is why we invited our suppliers to innovate with us and I’m delighted that household names like Kellogg's and Unilever have joined us in testing new ideas and approaches to sustainability at our Middleton store.
"Over the coming weeks and months we will be testing and learning from the customers in Middleton to understand how we can reduce our environmental impacts whilst still maintaining the great service and quality our customers demand.
"Our first priority will be to look at how we can reduce and remove plastic and I am excited to learn from our customers and see where this journey will take us."
