Leeds' Armley Gyratory reopens a day early with 30mph zone and narrower roads

A major roundabout in Leeds has reopened early after a weekend closure which caused major traffic disruption.

Armley Gyratory, which is one of the main roundabouts connecting Leeds city centre with motorways, has reopened this afternoon after closing to vehicles at 8pm on Friday evening.

The roundabout in Armley was be closed to vehicles from 8pm on Friday, April 8, and was expected to stay closed until 5.30am on Monday, April 11, but it reopened a day ahead of schedule today.

The closure of Armley Gyratory caused the city mayhem with diversions of up to 13 miles for some road users. Leeds City Council even urged eople to ditch their cars and use public transport instead to avoid conjestion.

The council announced the reopening today, saying: "Armley Gyratory is now open! Following a successful weekend closure, the route has reopened to traffic earlier than planned. Thank you for your patience and we apologise for any disruption."

A number of changes have been put into place following the reopening, including a 30mph speed limit, narrower lanes and other traffic management measures. The redevelopment work comes as part of multi-million pound improvement plans.

The plans released earlier this year include efforts to improve pedestrian facilities as well as the widening of roads, in and around the road, which often faces heavy congestion.

It is also hoped the changes will help to keep traffic out of Leeds city centre, which suffers some of the highest levels of air pollution in the district.
