Leeds and Premier League rivals call for emergency meeting 'in opposition' to Newcastle takeover

Leeds United and their Premier League rivals have reportedly joined forces to demand an emergency meeting to outline their 'opposition' to the Newcastle takeover.

The 18-month saga on Tyneside came to an end on Thursday evening when the Premier League confirmed their approval for the £300m sale to the consortium backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

It is a deal which has attracted criticism as a result of the Kingdom's human rights record, with Amnesty International standing against the attempt at 'sportswashing'.

Hatice Cengiz, the fiancee of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, said it was 'heartbreaking' to see the sale to the Public Investment Fund chaired by Mohammed bin Salman sanctioned.

The backing of the PIF, in conjunction with financier Amanda Staveley and the billionaire Reuben brothers, has transformed Newcastle into one of the world's richest clubs overnight.

It was a deal which previously appeared to derailed by an impasse over a separation concerns between bin Salman and the PIF.

However, Mike Ashley remained committed to the sale and it was resurrected and completed in a dramatic two-day spell on Tyneside.

Now, the Guardian reports Leeds have joined calls for an emergency meeting to demand answers on why the takeover was allowed to pass following the previous impasse.

The title claims it is an attempt to show 'how high feelings are running' among the 19 rival clubs, with the league's chief executive Richard Masters and chairman Gary Hoffman said to have received complaints.
