Leeds academy staff members self-isolating after positive Covid-19 test

A staff member at a Leeds school has tested positive for coronavirus only days after a year group was made to self-isolate.

It was revealed in a letter published on Leeds East Academy's website on Monday (Sept 21) which says a member of staff is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

The letter states the staff member affected became symptomatic on September 17 but there was no indication that the transmission took place at the academy.

It goes on to add they went into self-isolation and were contacted by NHS track and trace to inform them of a contact with coronavirus outside of the school.

All colleagues who were in close proximity to the staff member affected have been told to self-isolate for two weeks as a precaution.

It comes only days after a year 8 student tested positive for the virus with the whole year group now having to self-isolate for two weeks.

The letter from the principal Sarah Carrie, reads: "I need to make you all aware that a member of our staffing body has tested positive with COVID19.

"We have incredibly robust processes in place to address such instances swiftly and ensure that our academy community is kept safe and that we are fully adhering to government guidance.

"Please can I reassure you all that we have implemented this process very carefully, coupled with additional measures to those recommended, in order to further mitigate risk and ensure that the safety of our students and staff is central to the action we take.

“It is important for students, parents/carers to note that the member of staff concerned became symptomatic on Thursday 17th September. There is no indication that this transmission took place at Leeds East Academy.

"After commencing the self-isolation period, the member of staff was contacted by NHS Track and Trace to inform them of contact with a positive case outside of school. All areas of the academy have since been deep cleaned and the colleague was asked to immediately contact the academy if the test returned as positive.

“All colleagues who spent time in excess of 15 minutes and in close contact less than 2 metres proximity with the staff member were directed to go home and self-isolate for 14 days from the point of contact as a precaution."
