Leeds 3-1 Burnley: Tottenham relegation mire grows murkier still as rivals pull away from drop zone

Leeds beat already-relegated Burnley 3-1 at Elland Road to take another giant step towards Premier League safety, putting nine points between themselves and 18th-placed Tottenham.

Daniel Farke’s side, who lost 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final to Chelsea last Sunday, took an early lead through Anton Stach’s superb long-range strike before second-half efforts from Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Loum Tchaouna pulled one back for Burnley in the 71st minute but the managerless visitors, who parted company with Scott Parker by mutual consent on Thursday, slipped to a fifth straight league defeat.

Leeds’ third win in four league matches lifted them up to 14th in the table, nine points clear of the bottom three, with their relegation rivals all in action later this weekend.

Farke immediately seemed to recognise the significance of the win as he completed a triumphant lap of Elland Road, soaking up the adulation of the home supporters.

Leeds’ victory puts the onus back on Tottenham to pick up a win against in-form Aston Villa on Sunday, while also relying on West Ham at Brentford on Saturday, if they are to clamber out of the relegation zone this weekend.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side picked up their first league win of 2026 last time out against Wolves, but face a tall order if they are to take anything away from Villa Park, where Unai Emery’s side have won all but one of their last four matches.

Leeds will face Tottenham in north London for a relegation six-pointer next weekend, before finishing their season by hosting Brighton and visiting West Ham on the final day of the season - another match which will affect the lower reaches of the table.

Spurs, meanwhile, must still face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and host upwardly mobile Everton.

Leeds’ victory left club captain Ethan Ampadu quietly confident that his side could beat the drop.

He told Sky Sports: “We had the disappointment (against Chelsea in the FA Cup) last week so we wanted to bounce back and give the fans something to party about. We have three more games and hopefully we can have three more good results.”
