Leeds United 2-2 Newcastle United player ratings: Wilson earns star man as Pope also shines

Newcastle United had to settle for a point at Elland Road on a day in which their character was tested to the limit.

The hosts could have gone 2-0 up after Luke Ayling's opener but Nick Pope came to the rescue to save Patrick Bamford's penalty. Remarkably after Bamford fluffed the spot-kick, Newcastle then won a penalty of their own through Alexander Isak.

But Callum Wilson was on hand to slam home and make it 1-1 on a sunny day in Yorkshire. Both sides have had chances to go ahead before the break but we're all square in this crunch fixture.

After the break, Wilson put Newcastle ahead with another penalty but Rasmus Kristensen's equaliser rocked the Magpies.

How Newcastle players rated overall:

Nick Pope 8

Some key moments but perhaps the biggest moment of all came when he saved Patrick Bamford's penalty in the first half. Faced 18 shots in all.

Kieran Trippier 7

Bamford drifted past him for the opener and Kristensen's shot deflected off him. But hacked and scrapped attacks away all day.

Fabian Schar 7

Better after the break after rough first half which led to opening Leeds goal.

Sven Botman 7

Another to improve after the break. Will learn plenty from this physical test.

Dan Burn 7

Criticised by some but made some key interventions on a day when Leeds bombarded Magpies.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

Driving force in midfield at times on testing afternoon. Had hand in equaliser after slotting Isak.

Joelinton 8

Got away with one after conceding penalty. Rock solid after the break with a host of interceptions.

Joe Willock 6

Not his best day. Battled hard but taken off.

Miguel Almiron 6

Still doesn't seem fully fit.

Alexander Isak 8

Has been a genuine threat to Leeds down the sides. Had a hand in winning two penalties.

Callum Wilson 9

Was not only a threat but keeping his nerve in the pressure cooker atmosphere, not once but twice could be worth so much for the 17-goal striker.

Subs

Anthony Gordon 7 (for Almiron 72)

A bright enough cameo.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7 (for Wilson 72)

Caused a few problems when he came on.

Elliot Anderson (for Willock 87)

How Newcastle players rated in the first half:

Nick Pope 8

Got a strong hand on the opener before saving another penalty to deny Bamford. A key moment in the first half.

Kieran Trippier 6

Bamford drifted past him for opener. Otherwise steady.

Fabian Schar 6

Will feel he can do better on opening goal.

Sven Botman 6

Not his best moment for Leeds opener but he wasn't the only one at fault.

Dan Burn 6

Has battled hard enough.

Bruno Guimaraes 7

Not everything has came off for him but calmly slotted in Isak to win the penalty.

Joelinton 6

Got away with one after conceding penalty.

Joe Willock 7

Has opened Leeds up a couple of times with slick passes.

Miguel Almiron 6

Getting into the game more after slow start.

Alexander Isak 7

Has been a genuine threat to Leeds down the sides. Won the penalty.

Callum Wilson 7

Kept his nerve from the spot to fire Newcastle back in it. Some neat touches.
