Leeann Dempster urges patience over Celtic title call as Hibs chief insists season can be finished

Leeeann Dempster is adamant there is no need to rush a decision on calling the Premiership.

The Hibs chief executive believes every option must be explored while the opportunity remains to play the games later in the year.

UEFA meet on Thursday and, having had a resolution passed last week, the SPFL board have the option to finish the top flight immediately and award Celtic the title if Europe’s top brass give the green light.

However, Dempster feels that may be too quick and said: “There is a chance of finishing the season and we need to be open minded.

“If we were just to say it’s not happening, we’re not giving ourselves a chance.

“It’s going to be hard. We won’t pretend otherwise. But there is no requirement for us to be making decisions now, to call it now.

“We’ve got some time. It would be too quick to do so. Things are changing all the time and we need to give it every opportunity.

“If you’re not going to have people in the stadium anyway, why would you be absolutely barrelling towards starting next season on August 1 or whenever? It might be that you’ve got some time.

“The other argument is that this season has been really difficult and why would you take that difficulty into next season?

“I think it’s also becoming evident that we’re taking difficulties into next season, anyway.

“For example, you could start the new season in September? Could we finish the season much later than expected?

“People are talking about fairness, but we’re in extraordinary times.

“If you look at the lower league clubs voting to bring their season to an end, it was pretty clear what their direction of travel was.

“The Premiership is in a slightly different position because I don’t think there’s any significant financial imperative to have our season called quickly.

“We are able to give ourselves more thinking time and breathing space. We shouldn’t conclude the season now until we’ve exhausted all possibilities.

“When we’ve done that, we need to face into it and be brave and get on with it.

“Let’s explore every opportunity to play this league to a finish. And, if we can do it, let’s do it.

“Let’s open our minds a wee bit. If we’re not going to be ready to have supporters in the stadium until the middle of July, could we push it all back four weeks?

“I know many people will argue with me on this and tell me why it can’t be done, but could we complete the season in July and August, then have a short break and start in September?

“These are random options at the minute. But I think they’re feasible. And I think we should be thinking about them.”

Dempster, meanwhile, also assessed reconstruction plans. She switched out of the Task Force set-up on the issue to concentrate on the Club Operations group, but said: “We are open minded.

“But it would have to be a reconstruction that is progressive and looked at the opportunities in the game over the next five or 10 years. Not something that is just rushed or temporary.

“It has to be genuinely innovative and not just a quick fix for one season.”
