Lee Westwood rejects hopes of LIV vs PGA Tour match with Man Utd joke to Robbie Fowler

Lee Westwood rejected the idea of a LIV Golf vs PGA Tour grudge match, after former Liverpool and Manchester City striker Robbie Fowler proposed the plan.

Westwood was one of the big names to join the Saudi-backed series following its controversial inception last summer, alongside fellow European stalwarts Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter. Since then, the Englishman and his fellow LIV stars have been handed suspensions from the PGA Tour.

The breakaway circuit's 2022 formation has left the sport torn in two, with the PGA Tour and its new-found rival battling it out to become the sport's number one circuit.

Things turned ugly following the Tour's banning orders, and the two rival circuits now find themselves engrossed in a legal battle.

Amid the drama, former England international Fowler has called on LIV and the PGA Tour to settle their differences on the golf course.

Plotting the idea to Team Majesticks star Westwood, he wrote on Twitter: "Serious question @WestwoodLee.. could we see a Ryder cup style competition with @livgolf_league taking on the @PGATOUR? you'd get a few watching that, my idea."

Fowler's proposition was quickly played down by the former world No. 1 golfer, who compared the idea to the Liverpool legend joining arch rivals Manchester United. Westwood replied: "There’s more chance of you making a comeback and signing for Man Utd Rob!"

The idea of a grudge match has been discussed over social media by golf fans previously.

One man who joined the argument was LIV's trailblazer Phil Mickelson, and he brutally shut down the idea with a dig at his PGA Tour rivals.

The American tweeted: "It sounds great, but we would dominate them so soundly and it would be over so quick that tv would have to fill an hour of dead time. That’s why it’s not happening at this time."
