Lee Sharpe names the £220million transfer Manchester United need

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a huge rebuilding job at Old Trafford that could cost the club more than £300million.

Matty Longstaff's second half strike condemned United to a third league loss of the season yesterday afternoon, leaving Solskjaer's side two points above the drop zone.

Sunday's result heaped further pressure on the United boss, but Sharpe believes getting rid of another manager will not solve the current problems the club are enduring.

“The last three managers, and the last three ways of doing things, have all not worked,” Sharpe told talkSPORT on Monday morning, “So I don’t think it is just the managers.

“You’ve got to look at who is appointing the managers and who’s running the club from the top.

“This is another way of doing it, with Ole and playing youngsters and getting lads through the academy and getting rid of players like [Romelu] Lukaku and [Alexis] Sanchez and [Ander] Herrera.

“It is another avenue and they’ve got to trust what they are doing.

“Otherwise it’s another change at Christmas and it all starts from the beginning again.”

Before, the former playmaker explained what he thinks is needed to change the club's fortunes: “I think you are looking at least £300million. You need someone like a Harry Kane for £200m/£220m that is going to score you 25 goals a season and you’ve got a different outlook in the team.

“So it is not going to be a cheap one.

“It’s difficult to keep up with the likes of Man City and Liverpool when they’ve set such high standards.

“You’ve got to stop comparing this team to Liverpool and City and great United teams of the past and give them the chance to grow and educate themselves and become potentially what they could be in a year or 18 months’ time.”
