A father fatally stabbed as he travelled on a train from Guildford to London with his teenage son was knifed nine times, a court heard today.
IT firm owner Lee Pomeroy, 51, had been taking his 14-year-old son for a day-trip ahead of his 52nd birthday when he was stabbed on the 12.58pm service from Guildford to Waterloo on Friday.
Today Darren Shane Pencille appeared in court charged with his murder.
Pencille, 35, was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.
The defendant appeared in the dock at Staines Magistrates’ Court today wearing glasses and a prison-issue grey tracksuit.
He stood in the dock to confirm his name, date of birth and that he was British, telling magistrates he had no address during a hearing lasting just over two minutes
Pencille then addressed magistrates from his seat, telling them: “Innocent until proven guilty.”
He said: “I’m paranoid. I’m hearing voices.”
According to witnesses the men were involved in a three to four minute row, moving through the carriage and into another before the attack.
Pencille did not enter pleas and chair of the bench Helen Mattey remanded him in custody to appear at Guildford Crown Court later today.
Chelsea Mitchell, 27, of Willbury Road, Farnham, also appeared at the magistrates court charged with assisting an offender.
The court heard that she is the partner of Pencille.
The charge stated that the mother-of-one helped the alleged killer leave the scene and to change his appearance.
Prosector Sally Lakin said Mr Pomeroy had been stabbed nine times by Pencille after a row on the train.
Mitchell was also was remanded in custody to appear alongside Pencille to Guildford Crown Court this afternoon.
Police were called at 1.15pm to Horsley station on Friday and paramedics battled to save Mr Pomeroy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Pomeroy was described by his family as “an honourable man and would always help somebody who was in trouble”.
In a statement, the family said he was a cultured man, who loved his 50-year-old wife Svetlana Pomeroy.
The statement said: “He was an honest, bright person, who loved music very much, he knew history and art and he was a bachelor of science in Maths.
“He was devoted family man and did everything for his family. He was an honourable man and would always help somebody who was in trouble.
“He was a loving husband and father, he will be deeply missed by all his family.”
