Lee O’Connor vows to prove to Celtic boss Neil Lennon he is first-team material after Manchester United exit

Summer signing Lee O’Connor aims to prove he is good enough for Celtic’s first team.

The Republic of Ireland U21 starlet joined the Scottish champions from Manchester United on deadline day to leave Red Devils fans fuming their club had let a talented prospect walk out the door.

Although Jeremie Frimpong – who signed at the same time from Manchester City – has made his debut, O’Connor has yet to pull on the Hoops for real.

But the young Celtic defender is hell-bent on impressing Neil Lennon after playing the 90 minutes for his country in the 0-0 draw with Italy on Thursday night.

Frimpong turned out for Celtic in their Betfred Cup win over Partick Thistle (Alan Harvey/SNS Group)

O’Connor, 19 said: “I’ve been enjoying it. I’m just settling in at the moment, I’m just looking forward to playing my football and showing them what I can do.

“At the moment, I’m just looking to get a run of games (at underage level) and show them why they’ve got me there. Hopefully, the coaching staff will see and next pre-season, I can show the first-team manager that I’m capable enough to make the step.

“They put great faith in me. I’m very grateful for that, so I’m just looking to repay their faith now, get a good run of games and have a good performance level.

“You want to get into the first team. That’s why I went to Celtic – it’s what I’m looking to do and hopefully I can do it.”
