Lee O'Connor set for Celtic transfer as Manchester United defender nears Parkhead switch

Celtic are set to sign rising Manchester United academy star Lee O'Connor on a permanent deal.

The 19-year-old Irishman is a target for the Premiership champions who are looking to beat the transfer deadline in their bid to land the versatile defender.

Celtic have their sights fixed on one of the Red Devils' hottest commodities but Manchester City right-back Jeremie Frimpong remains an option.

O'Connor, who has been at United since 2016, has impressed at youth level and earned a place in United's Champions League squad last season.

The right-back has played over 100 games at youth level for the Old Trafford side and Martin O'Neill also included him as part of his Republic of Ireland squad for a Nations League encounter with Denmark.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon has already added two right-backs this summer after the arrivals of Hatem Abd Elhamed and Moritz Bauer.

Former Manchester United stopper John O'Shea is a massive fan of O'Connor and reckons the former Waterford graduate can go all the way to the top.

He said:  "I saw Lee up close and other people had been talking to me about him and I’d been trying to keep an eye on his career.

“Look he was quality, top quality on the pitch. He looked very comfortable, he went right-back to left-back in a breeze, it was no problem to him.”
