Lee O'Connor 'over the moon' with star showing on Ireland senior debut

Republic of Ireland defender Lee O'Connor was overjoyed to pick up an assist in his first senior Ireland match against New Zealand on Thursday night.

The Celtic teen swung in an inch perfect cross for Callum Robinson to head home to cap off an impressive debut outing at the Aviva Stadium.

But the youngster is still expecting to miss out on the Denmark game, and has his eyes set on the Under-21s crunch clash with Sweden in Tallaght the following day.

"I'm ecstatic," O'Connor told Mirror Sport after the game. "It just doesn't get any better than that, playing for your country and getting an assist, so I'm just over the moon.

"You'd have to ask Mick [if I'm in contention for Denmark], I'm over the moon with tonight and I'm happy to go back and play for the Under-21s.

"We've got a very big game against Sweden on Tuesday and my focus is on that now."

The Waterford native, who has yet to play a first team game for his club since joining from Manchester United this Summer, had family up to watch the match after being told he would start the day before.

"The first thing I did when I heard was got straight on the phone so that I could call and tell everybody, I was over the moon.

"It really showed that Mick [McCarthy] has great faith in me and I was very thankful for that so hopefully I showed him I was capable of starting".

O'Connor had shown his capability at right back throughout the match, but it got very memorable when he placed the ball on the head of Sheffield United striker Callum Robinson to score his first Ireland goal in the 75th minute.

"I whipped the ball in and I was just hoping somebody could get on the end of it," O'Connor explained. "I was lucky it was Callum there, it was a great goal."
