Lee McGregor and Josh Taylor eyeing Edinburgh domination after stunning European title victory

Lee McGregor and Josh Taylor are eyeing Edinburgh world domination after the former’s stunning European bantamweight title victory last night.

McGregor knocked down reigning champ Karim Guerfi three times in the opening round to secure a quickfire knockout at the University of Bolton Stadium.

After just ten professional fights, McGregor now holds the Commonwealth, British and European belts.

MTK stable mate and close friend Josh Taylor became World Champion in 15 fights, which gives McGregor time to break the Prestonpans man’s record.

Friendly rivalry aside, McGregor is now looking ahead to Taylor’s massive world super lightweight unification title fight with Jose Ramirez on 22 May in Las Vegas.

“Lightning” could potentially be on the undercard for that one, and a Taylor win would see the capital duo clean up.

He told IFLTV: “I did the Commonwealth didn’t I? He was seven fights, I was five! He needs to win his next fight and if he does, we’ve got every single belt in boxing. That’s no bad for two wee Scottish toerags!

“There’s talk I’m going to be out in Vegas on Josh’s card and then we’ll take it from there. I’ve said it time and time again but I’m not scoured to take on any challenges my team put in front of me.

“I’ve got a whole new mindset now. I’m a proper professional. Obviously I’ll have a little celebration but normally I’d go away, I’d eat crap, balloon up in weight and just do stupid stuff.

“But I’m not going to do that. I’m loving my life, I’m loving boxing and I cannot wait to get to Monday and I’ll be back training.

“I can enjoy my grub for a little bit but not long.

“I’ve sacrificed a lot. I've been training for this since September so I wouldn’t mind a little break.

“But you can’t turn down an opportunity to go over to Vegas and fight on your best mate’s undisputed world title fight undercard. There’s no way I wouldn’t do that.

“I’ll get my good break after that.”

“We’re history makers,’ added Taylor. “ Edinburgh boxing’s never been so good. Scottish boxing’s never been so good actually. The talent we’ve got at the minute is unbelievable.”
