Lee Mason won't be involved in any Premier League game this weekend after West Brom error

Referee Lee Mason will not be involved in any of this weekend's games the Premier League has confirmed.

The 49-year-old was at the centre of controversy last Saturday during West Brom's win over Brighton at the Hawthorns.

Mason disallowed a Lewis Dunk free-kick despite blowing his whistle for play to restart.

It led to mass protests from the Brighton players and resulted in heavy criticism.

Mason was due to be the fourth official for Liverpool's game at Bramall Lane 24 hours later, but was withdrawn.

A calf injury was put down as the reason for his absence.

That is again being cited as the reason for his lack of involvement this weekend.

Dunk accused Mason of "hiding" as he lamented the decision to rule out his strike at West Brom.

"It's embarrassing, it's a horrendous decision," Dunk told  Sky Sports .

"I said to the ref 'can I take it?', he blew his whistle, and I took it.

"Just because there was so much pressure from the bench. Why doesn't he come and speak to the press like me? Never, they hide behind their bubble.

"I don't think he knew what he was doing. He gave the goal, why did he give it?

"I don't know why VAR was getting involved, he said 'goal'... you can look on the video if you want.

"Had he lost control of the game? Yeah, he did. Fact."

The decision proved crucial as the Seagulls went on to lose the game 1-0.

Jeff Stelling in the Soccer Saturday studio was also left stunned that the goal was ruled out.

"This is a shambles. Lee Mason, what have you done?" he questioned.

"VAR has given no goal and now he is going to look at the screen. This is a total, utter, shameful, disgraceful, piece of nonsense!"
