Lee Johnson 'visited Arsenal' to try and sign Eddie Nketiah ahead of Leeds United - report

Bristol City came very close to signing Eddie Nketiah and even had a medical lined up for the Arsenal striker.

That's according to The Athletic publication and the highly respected Leeds United reporter Phil Hay, who today has detailed how the Whites won the race for the England U20 forward.

As Bristol Live reported during the summer, Nketiah was one of City's top transfer targets and the Robins came close to securing the talented forward's signature.

However, as Hay covers - and which Bristol Live understands is true - head coach Lee Johnson visited Arsenal himself in the final week of the transfer window to deliver a pitch to the Gunners and try to persuade Nketiah to come to the West Country.

Fortuna Dusseldorf were also credited with an interest but eventually Leeds United won the race, with director of football Victor Orta playing a significant role in the capture - with his friendship with Unai Emery from their time together at Sevilla a big factor in negotiations.

And after an impressive pre-season campaign as he netted twice for Arsenal, Nketiah scored his first goal under Marcelo Bielsa when he fired in the opening score of the Carabao Cup encounter between Salford City and Leeds on Tuesday night.

What might have been, as City missed out - although they were able to bring in powerful forward Benik Afobe late in the window.

Bristol City play QPR on Saturday and will hope that their own forwards can hit form.
