Lee Johnson sweating on fitness of Charlie Wyke ahead of play-offs

Sunderland are sweating on the fitness of 30-goal top scorer Charlie Wyke ahead of their play-off campaign.

The Black Cats' 3-1 win at Plymouth in the penultimate game of the season secured a top six finish and a place in the play-offs.

But they were without key men Wyke and Aiden McGeady at Home Park.

McGeady's absence was not a surprise as he has been playing through the pain of a foot problem recently, but Wyke's non-appearance was more of a concern.

Boss Lee Johnson revealed that Wyke has a thigh muscle problem, and he is expected to have a scan this week to discover the extent of the issue.

And he is also facing a minor operation to cure an infection in his gum which is causing him toothache.

"We hope it's not serious for Charlie," said Johnson.

"First and foremost, it's a thigh problem, and we hope it's just a superficial tear rather than in the belly of the muscle.

"He's also got an infected tooth - well, bone really. That needs to be fixed and it'll be a little operation, but he should only be out for a couple of days."

Johnson included Conor McLaughlin in his starting XI at Plymouth, with the defender returning just a couple of weeks after undergoing a hernia operation.

The Northern Ireland international went off at half-time but Johnson said that was pre-planned, and there was no recurrence of the injury.

He said: "We felt it was the right risk to start him because with Conor we're chasing that play-off semi final.

"Although we needed to win today and he wasn't quite ready, we were chasing those 20 days to the play-off semi-final.

"So it was always going to be 45 minutes for him and we thought it was better to start him and get the warm up etc. than throw him on after a couple of the jogs up the line or whatever."
