Lee Johnson's 'license to play' which convinced Aiden McGeady to sign Sunderland contract extension

Aiden McGeady has heaped praise on Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson after the winger signed a one-year extension with the club earlier this week.

The 35-year-old wingers was the Black Cats talisman last season, racking up an impressive 16 assists and six goals in all competitions.

Sunderland fans could breath a sigh of relief when McGeady signed the extension earlier this week and now eagerly anticipate news on their remaining out of contract trio; Luke O'Nien, Denver Hume and Charlie Wyke.

Speaking to safc.com, McGeady praised Johnson for bringing him back from the cold, citing that if 'another manager' was still in charge at the club, he would not be here.

McGeady said: “I think the manager is a big factor in me coming back into the team, my form towards the end of the season and helping me to stay as well.

“If it was another manager then I don't think I would be here, but he made it quite clear from as soon as he took over that he wanted me to play and be a big player in his team.

“He showed a lot of faith in me and I'd like to think I repaid that faith to an extent, but there's a lot more to be done to be successful.

“But the manager was a big part in me wanting to stay.

“I've played probably my best football for a couple of years, especially when I came back into the team, under him.

“He gives me licence to play and I know now what he wants from his team. It's quite exciting.”
