Lee Johnson on the position that gives Lynden Gooch the 'highest ceiling'

Sunderland forward Lynden Gooch returned to the matchday squad after testing positive for Covid-19 in midweek.

The 25-year-old has struggled for game time so far this season through injuries but Lee Johnson is confident that he knows the American's best position despite only working with him for a matter of months.

Gooch has played at right-back, right-wing and centrally during his time on Wearside, but the Black Cats boss says that his versatility poses different questions to that of team mate Luke O'Nien.

Johnson said: "I think it can work in both ways [versatility]. Me personally, I like to think that Lynden is that 9-and-a-half, the one that can drop down centrally into those deeper areas but also has the ability to run in behind - which he's definitely got.

"I think he's got composure which could do with an element of improvement. Technically, physically and charisma, he's got all of that to go and be successful at this level.

"He's a tough little cookie and he wants to battle and bite. I like that.

"He's quick to react which is a prerequisite to play in my team. He's got a lot of strengths and can play a number of other positions which just means more game time for him.

"He always shows a good attitude in whatever position he plays. I think for me - his ceiling is higher in those central areas from what I've seen so far.

"Of course I'll reserve the right to change that judging on what goes on."
