Lee Johnson gives insight into ex-Bristol City defender on loan from Cardiff City at Sheffield Wednesday

One transfer deadline day Championship switch that may have raised the eye-brow in Carlo Ancelotti fashion in the South West will have been that of Aden Flint.

The 6ft 5 and a half inch central defender was instrumental in the Robins' magical 2014/15 season and scored an incredible 15 goals across the campaign, with only Aaron Wilbraham netting more across all competitions that year.

The £300,000 signing from Swindon Town became City's player of the season for 2015/16 as relegation from the Championship was staved off, before a move to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018.

It was one year under Tony Pulis, before Neil Warnock then recruited Flint for Cardiff City for 2019/20, before Flint then headed up to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day a week ago, to make it four clubs in four seasons.

His former boss Lee Johnson was invited to comment on the move and how the Owls get the best from him, during a commentary stint for Sky Sports as they covered the Owls' defeat to Brentford on Wednesday. Johnson was asked what Flint may hope to gain from the move to Hillsborough last week, and expanded on that:

"A bit of stability in team selection, that’s for sure," explained Johnson. "He had a good player he was up against in [Sean] Morrison at Cardiff."

“For a centre-half to have 52 goals is unbelievable. You have to use that, you have to get the best out of him in that sense.

“He’s a quirky character, a lovely lad, and always a lively one in and around the dressing room.

“If you can get him onside, he’s such a weapon in terms of set-plays - both in your own box, but obviously more importantly, in the opposition’s box. I’m really interested to see how he settles into this side," he said.

It was of course Johnson who sold Flint to Middlesbrough two years ago, to then buy Adam Webster, quipping: "I'm only selling Aden Flint if you get me Adam Webster."

Flint helped his new team to a clean sheet and win at Birmingham City in his first game for the south Yorkshire side, before the loss to the Bees in midweek.
