Lee Johnson gives a fitness update on Lynden Gooch and Callum Doyle

Lynden Gooch is expected to miss Sunderland's midweek game against Cheltenham with the foot injury that kept him out of the win against Bolton.

The forward picked up the injury in training last week but played in last Saturday's draw against Fleetwood Town.

But he did not play in the midweek Carabao Cup win at Wigan, nor was he restored to the side against Bolton.

Sunderland boss Lee Johnson says Gooch is unlikely to play in Tuesday's home game, but he could be back in contention for next Saturday's trip to Portsmouth.

"I don't think it's too serious," Johnson said.

"He picked up a knock on the top of the foot in training in the run-up to the Fleetwood game, and more than likely that has been deferred to the bottom of the foot now and it's his plantar fascia ligament that is starting to cause him a bit of a problem.

"I would expect him to be out again on Tuesday, but potentially available for next Saturday or maybe Lincoln [in the EFL Trophy] on the Tuesday."

Centre-back Callum Doyle went off late in the game against Bolton with a back issue, and Johnson is not yet sure whether he will be ready to play against Cheltenham.

He said: "Callum had a bit of a stiff back going into the game and had a bit of treatment on it yesterday, and I think it just seized up on him.

"Whether or not he will be fit for Tuesday, 72 hours from talking now, I don't know."
