Lee Johnson discusses 'mentor' Ashley Williams' Bristol City contract extension

Bristol City have confirmed that defender Ashley Williams has extended his stay at the Robins until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old centre-back joined on a free transfer and initially signed until January. However, that has now been extended to May, following Williams playing nine games.

The Wales international, who scored his first Bristol City goal on Friday night, has also been recalled by Ryan Giggs.

And scotching rumours that he could go elsewhere with Anderlecht previously linked, Williams is now set to remain in BS3 until at least the end of the campaign, if not longer.

Lee Johnson told the official club website that: “Ashley has made an important contribution both as a player and a mentor to the younger players in the side given his knowledge and experience.

"It was an initial short-term contract to see whether it was right for Ashley and ourselves, which it certainly has been, and I am pleased that he is with us until the end of the season.”

Effectively the former Everton and Swansea City man has passed his probationary period.

And the powerful central defender has given his reaction on the news.

Williams told official Robins channels: "I’ve been happy with how it [City career] has started, for us as a team and a club.

"For me, I’ve stayed in the team and I think I’ve done reasonably well. I can still play better, I’m learning all the time, trying my best and we’ve had a good start. It’s not been all ups but we’ll take the start we’ve had on the whole, definitely," he added.
