Lee Dixon tells Shkodran Mustafi to "pipe down" in blast at resurgent Arsenal defender

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon has told Shkodran Mustafi to "pipe down" in an extraordinary blast at the resurgent Gunners defender.

Mustafi has enjoyed a return to form after coming under fire from fans for his performances over the first half of the season.

But he has enjoyed a run of games under Mikel Arteta, starting each of Arsenal's last five Premier League outings.

But Dixon has warned the German in no uncertain terms not to get too far ahead of himself - and took aim at Mustafi's rather striking silver haircut sported during the win over Everton .

Dixon told The Handbrake Off podcast: "He [Mustafi] seriously needs to have a word with himself and pipe down a little bit.

"Bang me 25 appearances out and 15 clean sheets then he can do what he likes with his hair and his sunglasses.

"Just sit back down for a bit and carry on churning the results out."

Arsenal have enjoyed an upturn in form under Arteta but suffered a crushing exit from the Europa League at the hands of Olympiakos on Thursday night.

Pape Abou Cisse's second-half strike levelled the tie at 1-1 and forced extra-time, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thought he had sent Arsenal through with an equaliser on the night.

But Youusef El-Arabi struck in the 119th minute to trigger scenes of ecstasy in the away end, though Aubameyang did spurn a golden opportunity straight after to seal Arsenal's progression.

All attention now turns to the Premier League for Arteta's men, who currently sit four points out of fifth place - a position which will secure Champions League football next term if Manchester City's two-year ban from European competition is upheld.
