Lee Dixon's brutal verdict on Mikel Arteta's first game as Arsenal head coach

Lee Dixon believes Arsenal have become "used to mediocrity" after their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Boxing Day at the Vitality Stadium.

The game was the first under new manager Mikel Arteta following his appointment last Friday, although the former Gunners skipper did watch on from the stands against Everton.

Arteta was appointed following Unai Emery's sacking in November after the Gunners endured one of their worst starts to a Premier League season in their history.

And despite failing behind to Dan Gosling’s first half opener, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rescued his side a point in the second half.

But Dixon, speaking afterwards on Amazon Prime, believes the Spaniard has a lot of work to do at his new club, that could take him considerable time.

"The problem is we’ve got used to mediocrity," the former Gunners full-back said.

"Arteta has come in to a new club, so he’s going to praise his players.

"There were positive but a point at struggling Bournemouth isn’t great

"He has a lot of work to do."

"These players haven’t suddenly turned a corner. It will take months and months, if not new players to do it."

Arsenal currently sit 11th in the league table and return to action against Chelsea on Sunday.
