Lee Congerton resigns as Celtic recruitment chief to reunite with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester

Celtic's head of recruitment Lee Congerton has resigned after two years at Parkhead to reunite with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester.

The former Hoops boss brought his trusted transfer guru to Glasgow in March 2017 and the Welshman was tasked with finding gems in the market.

Congerton had been working closely with interim boss Neil Lennon in recent weeks as the Parkhead side put together their list of targets ahead of a pivotal summer transfer window.

But now the talent spotter is heading to the Premier League and will replace Eduardo Macia who left for Bordeaux earlier this year.

The former Chelsea scout has been widely criticised over his work in the market and our own Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton has called for a Celtic return for John Park.

Rodgers hit the jackpot with the signings of Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair during his first transfer window but Congerton was unable to replicate that success with several missteps including German flop Marvin Compper and high-profile loan disaster Charly Musonda.

A Celtic statement read: "Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Lee for his contribution to the club and we wish him the very best for the future.

"The existing staff within Celtic’s scouting and recruitment department will continue to work closely with club management on the identification of players who can benefit the club.

"The club has already commenced the process to appoint a new head of recruitment, something which will be completed as soon as possible."

The Hoops face a summer of change with Dedryck Boyata, Mikael Lustig, Emilio Izaguirre and Cristian Gamboa all out of contract.

Leicester confirmed Congerton will take up the role as senior head of recruitment minutes after Celtic announced his departure.
