Lee Clark to play host Newcastle festive quiz night and tickets are on sale

An evening 'caper' event in the city has a new signing, in the form of ex-Newcastle United star Lee Clark.

The former player and Toon legend is the latest surprise guest announced for the Great Market Caper which will serving up a new programme of entertainment and food and drink pop-ups on December 3. The festive edition of the after-hours event held in Newcastle's Grainger Market has enlisted Clark - who was a key member of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers - to host the night's Great Christmas Caper Quiz.

And he can't wait. “I am really looking forward a great night at The Caper," he said. "Hosting the Caper quiz will be a bit of light-hearted fun but, with the bragging rights that come with victory, I’m sure there’ll be a fair bit of competition to win too.”

The inaugural quiz is set to test people's knowledge of North East facts and fiction and Clark will be asking all the questions. He added: "I think it’s fantastic to see the Grainger Market being used to show off so much of the talent we have here in the North East."

The city favourite, whose career on the pitch also saw him play for Sunderland and England before turning to manager roles, was appointed director of football at non-league side Newcastle Blue Star in 2020 ahead of two spells managing Al-Merrikh in the Sudan Premier League. North East fans can also expect to see him make another local appearance, during an upcoming England World Cup match screening at NX Newcastle.

The caper quiz will see the winning team receive a Christmas hamper of goodies, worth around £100, supplied by some of the market's popular traders. It is set to include questions by Clark about local heritage and popular culture and Great Market Caper organiser Sean Bullick said they might well also cover the odd football fact or two.

He suggested the line-ups of previous capers, which first made their debut in the market in September, could provide further clues to questions. He said of the addition of Clark to December's line-up: "We’re so pleased to have an actual Entertainer hosting the festive entertainment at the Caper.

"We really appreciate Lee’s involvement and his commitment to supporting the Caper and the city more widely - what more can we say, he really is a local legend!”

For more information about what will be on offer on December 3, including comedy, live music, food and drink, and to buy tickets see here. Those keen to register a team to play the quiz are asked to email hello@thecaper.co.uk with details of the team name and the number of members (up to a maximum of 12).
