Lee Clark in Kilmarnock come-and-get-me plea as ex-boss admits Rugby Park regrets

Lee Clark has revealed he’d love to finish what he started as Kilmarnock gaffer.

The former Rugby Park boss has thrown his hat in the ring to take over from Italian Angelo Alessio who was axed last week.

Clark regrets leaving the Ayrshire club in 2017 for another crack at English football with Bury.

During his year at Rugby Park, Clark signed the likes of Jordan Jones, Kris Ajer, Freddie Woodman, Sean Longstaff and Souleymane
Coulibaly, and gave Greg Taylor his top-team debut.

He believes he has unfinished business in Ayrshire and said: “I was on the verge of creating something special after we turned the club around.

“It wasn’t on the scale of what Steve Clarke achieved but we’d got the club away from a relegation fight and towards the top six.

“It’s an impressive club with a fantastic fan base and great people working behind the scenes. Billy Bowie’s put a superb infrastructure in place so it’s a job I’d seriously consider if there was any interest from the club.

“I regret leaving but I was too eager to prove myself down south.

“Our recruitment had been good, we’d brought in some top players such as Woodman and Ajer.

“In hindsight, I should have developed that over a longer period of time.

“I was also a big advocate of giving Killie youngsters a chance and we should have continued the job.”

Clark is currently working part-time as gaffer of non-league Blyth Spartans but has an agreement in place to leave if he’s offered a full-time job elsewhere.

The Kilmarnock board and head of football operations James Fowler are sifting through candidates for the vacancy.

Gary Holt , Ally McCoist and Jim McIntyre have all been linked with the post while Rangers reserve boss Peter Lovenkrands is also on the club’s radar.
