Lee Chin says there's no sense of last hurrah for Davy Fitzgerald with Wexford

Lee Chin says there’s no sense of a last hurrah with Davy Fitzgerald as Wexford set out on the Championship trail again this evening.

Fitzgerald is now in his fifth season at the helm in Wexford having been in management at senior inter-county level continuously since taking charge of Waterford in 2008 before moving on to his native Clare three years later.

He hinted strongly that he would depart the Wexford hotseat after their gut-wrenching loss to Tipperary in the 2019 All-Ireland semi-final but instead signed up for further two years, meaning that this campaign is the last that he has committed for as things stand.

Star man Chin commented: “He's as passionate as ever about his job, there has been no sign that it's his last year for me. I'm just enjoying the time I have with him and I think all the lads are.

“In 2019 we came to that crossroads when we didn't know what he was looking to do but I personally assured him that I would support him no matter what his decision was and it would be the same this year, whatever his decision will be.

“At the moment I'm just enjoying the time we're having.”

Fitzgerald will complete a two-game ban for this evening’s Leinster quarter-final against Laois in UPMC Nowlan Park and will return to the sideline for next weekend’s semi-final against Kilkenny should they progress.

Wexford endured a stop-start League campaign due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the camp but Chin is satisfied that they’re in fine fettle entering the Championship.

He added: “There were elements throughout the League that we found it hard to get a bit of rhythm and we found it hard to find that bit of consistency. Throughout particular games we found it hard to get consistency, but I think towards the end of the League we started gathering it a small bit more.

“Particularly in the Antrim game, I found it was a bit more of a consistent performance throughout the game, and then the Dublin game was pretty much consistent throughout the 75 minutes or whatever it was that was played.

“But generally enough, happy enough with the league, yeah. We finished second in the table, and we got a decent amount out of it.”
