Lee Cattermole makes first post-Sunderland move after joining Eredivisie outfit VVV-Venlo

Former Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has officially signed for Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo.

The 31-year-old joined the Eredivisie side on a trial basis last week after leaving the Black Cats in the summer.

The Englishman has remained a free agent since leaving Sunderland but has failed to secure a move in England, although there were links he could join up with Steve Bruce at Sheffield Wednesday before he joined Newcastle United

However, months of searching for a deal are finally over.

Cattermole has now joined VVV-Venlo on a one-year deal, his first venture in professional football outside of the UK.

The club confirmed the deal on their Twitter account earlier today, which has seen messages from Sunderland supporters pour in.

The combative midfielder will team up with former teammate Jerome Sinclair, who spent time on loan at the Stadium of Light in the 2017/18 season.

Cattermole made 261 appearances for the Black Cats after joining from Wigan for £6m in 2009.

The former Wigan Athletic was a fans' favourite at the Stadium of Light but after missing out on an immediate return to the Championship his 40k-a-week contract was mutually cancelled.

Cattermole could make his debut for the club when they take on Utrecht on Sunday away from home.

Venlo sit 12th in the Eredivisie table after three matches, with three points to their name from a possible nine.
